Columbia REN wants to extend a HUGE shout out to the whole REN team for their hard work pulling off the Tribal History Shared History trainings that have been happening!
For the past year the CREN has been working in partnership with the Tribal Nations Educator Collaborative to put on a series of trainings in the area to support teachers implementing the Oregon Department of Education’s Tribal History/Shared History Curriculum.
This partnership has been a pilot project to develop a training that is responsive to teacher needs and reflective of our local community. Our initial training took place in spring of 2024 and was a great success. Teachers were supported accessing the curriculum, looking at lessons they have taught in the past through a different lens, learning about the local and statewide history of our Native tribes and hearing directly from local tribal members about their experiences in our schools.
After our initial training three of our partner districts (Hood River, North Wasco and Dufur) reached out for more support with training educators, in response we have done multiple day trainings this fall in all of those districts. All teachers who have participated in one of our training sessions will receive ongoing support over the next year from our design coaches in a community of practice.
